Spondon turns out for Christmas lights switch-on

An estimated 2,000 people filled the streets of Spondon's village centre on Saturday evening to enjoy this year's Christmas lights switch-on event, Spondon Alight.

Hundreds of Spondon families plus people from further afield enjoyed the brilliant festive atmosphere created by fun fair rides, musical entertainment, stalls and more which lined Sitwell Street and Chapel Street in the village.

The evening also saw a spectacular fireworks display before the lights were then switched on, adding further to the magical atmosphere of the night. A new special Christmas light was also unveiled on the night following a design competition in Spondon schools. The winning design by St Werburgh's pupil Keira (pictured right) was made into a real display which takes its place amongst the display on Sitwell Street.

Spondon shops opened late into the evening, many offering free drinks, sweets, mince pies and other treats to help visitors enjoy the night. Spondon Village Hall was busy all night too with stalls, refreshments and seating for those wanting to rest their legs for a time, while Santa was in his grotto in Chapel Side seeing as many boys and girls as possible during the night.

The event was organised by the Spondon Traders Association, who were delighted with the turnout for the event. Posting on their Facebook page, the STA said: "Great evening and turn out for the annual Xmas lights this year. Thank you all for making this evening special by attending and for your continued support."

Many people also took to our own Facebook page to add their comments about the night. Collette Brotherton posted: "Proud to be from Spondon. The fireworks were excellent and the turnout brilliant. Well done to everyone who organised it!" while Mark J Smith posted: "Another well planned night. Thanks to all those that clearly made a big effort in organising."

Former Spondon resident Sara Jane Harrison was back in the area for the weekend visiting family and added: "I left Spondon 32 years ago, visiting family in Spondon this weekend so went down to the village for the lights and fireworks. What a fantastic community spirit going on."

Amongst the comments was lots of praise for the fabulous fireworks display while many also agreed that closing the roads for the event this year made it a much safer and more relaxing time for all.

Our thanks to the Spondon Traders Association for organising another amazing community event and also to everyone who took part in the night or came out to show their support and enjoy the festivities.
