Spondon Traders plan ahead for 2012

Following their success back in November with the brilliant Christmas Lights Switch-on event, the Spondon Traders Association (STA) are forging ahead with plans for more events and activities in 2012.

Speaking about the November event, STA chairman Mark Davis said: “The evening seemed to be an enormous success, with an amazing atmosphere, and great community spirit. It was a tribute to all the hard, dedicated work of the STA committee, and also some of its members. I think that you will agree that how the Village looked was something quite special, and something to be proud of.”

"A number of thanks need to be made, in no particular order:

  • The co-operation and advice of the local police was invaluable.
  • The council officers that helped me with the street closure of Chapel Street.
  • The Spondon Festival team for the superb Santa’s Grotto, this added a great deal to the evening.
  • Everyone in the Village Hall, it was great.
  • The Woden Cub group.
  • Mixed Blessings Choir.
  • Rick Sheehan, who donated his services and did an amazing set.
  • Trent Barton Buses.
  • The Spondon Neighbourhood Board, for their amazing support.
  • The Spondon Councillors and Neighbourhood manager, I know they did a lot of work “behind the scenes”.
  • The Spondon Youth and Youth Services for their help in collections.
  • The Estate Manager and owner of the Chapel Street precinct for their help and co-operation.
  • Richard Heappey, for the amazing stage and lighting
  • Everyone else that I have forgotten!!"

    Mark continued: "We are aware that even the closure of Chapel Street did not completely remove the pedestrian / traffic problem, further discussions will need to be undertaken.

    "The raffle and collection tins were wonderfully supported by everyone in Spondon, so much so that we drew and presented a second iPad prize."

    The Spondon Traders are now formulating their plans for the coming year, which are set to include:

  • marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by putting up the bunting and Union flags. Also working with the SCA/VIC on other Jubilee-related events.
  • marking the Olympics
  • pursuing and publicising the STA competition to design a flag for Spondon
  • discussing “Street Decorations” with the VIC

    Plus of course the STA will be once again planning ahead for next Christmas and Spondon Alight for 2012.
